Declare assets or face civil disobedience, Imran tells politicians

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday demanded of the government to make all parliamentarians and politicians declare their assets within the next couple of months, otherwise his party would launch a civil disobedience movement and block all major cities with the support of the public.

While addressing a mammoth gathering at the Minar-e-Pakistan grounds, he also spelled out his agenda for bringing about a socio-economic change in the country. “(The) PTI is setting up a special cell to compile data about the assets of all parliamentarians and politicians, and it will finish its job in a few months.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, while accusing Asif Zardari of leading a ring of corrupt people and plunderers of national wealth, demanded that he step down as president and return all looted wealth or the people of Pakistan would publicly hang him and his cronies.

The CM was addressing a massive gathering at the Bhaati Chowk on the culmination of a large rally that marched from Nasser Bagh to the Chowk to condemn the corruption, loadshedding, price-hike and lawlessness in the country. “The people of Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and Larkana will not spare him and like in Egypt, every square in the country will become Al-Tahrir Square for him,” Shahbaz warned.

Shahbaz said if parliament did not hold Zardari and his cronies accountable for their corrupt practices, the people of Pakistan would hang them on chowks and not let them flee the country.

The charged protestors, including women, elderly persons and youth, raised the slogans of “Go Zardari Go”, and held up banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the corrupt practices of “Zardari and his cronies.” Charged participants also held up a large number of green party flags, whereas huge posters, banners and flags were displayed all along the rally route. Several welcome camps on the way were playing national and party songs to keep the workers charged up.

Central leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, including Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Senator Mushahid Ullah Khan, Khwaja Mohammad Asif, Hamza Shahbaz and others, were also present on the occasion. A large number of PML-N workers from Lahore and adjoining districts, including Sheikhupura, Kasur and from cities of Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Khanewal, came to
attend the rally.

“The nation will oust the corrupt rulers and hang the plunderers who have pushed the country into darkness in the last three years,” said Shahbaz, who directed his wrath on President Zardari and spared other PPP leaders and PML-N opponents. He said the ruling mafia had insulted the nation by continuing its corrupt practices and begging from foreign powers. He harshly criticised Asif Zardari for his commendatory letter in the US media after the May 2 operation in Abbottabad saying: “Anybody who congratulates Americans for their invasion of Pakistani territory can never be acceptable as the President of Pakistan.”

Coming down hard on President Zardari he said, “Last year when south Punjab was under immense floodwaters and facing devastation, Zardari was paying a visit to his palace in France. And this year, when Sindh faced a similar situation, the president was in London for the sake of his corrupt pursuits. This massive gathering of people cursing Zardari for his corruption and apathy towards public woes should be an eye-opener for him and his cronies,” added Shahbaz.

The Punjab CM said even PPP workers, following in the footsteps of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, could not be purchased by Zardari who had the one-point agenda of plundering national wealth.Slamming the president, he said Asif Zardari was now looking for ‘spies’ and ‘intruders’ to hijack the vote bank of Nawaz Sharif, but he would never succeed in his schemes. Comparing the current regime with that of Nawaz Sharif’s, he said under Nawaz Sharif, the country made tremendous progress and huge projects like the Motorway, Gwadar Port etc., were launched. On the other hand, he said, Zardari caused huge damage to institutions like PIA, Railways and Steel Mills where corruption has become the order of the day.

He said an ‘evil’ person was ruling the country which would never make any progress under him because he had nothing on his mind but looting the country. Shahbaz recited the famous poem of the late Habib Jalib, ‘Main Nahee Maanta” and enthralled the crowd which chanted vociferous slogans against President Zardari.

“Like dengue, we will also defeat Zardari,” said Shahbaz adding that the president did not even bother to inquire about the people dying of dengue. He said it was the PML-N that had set up Daanish schools, launched the Aashiyana scheme for the poor and recruited 70,000 teachers on merit and police officials in a transparent manner while Zardari had given nothing to the nation except disappointment.

He said a slogan was raised in 1947 to win freedom from Hindu imperialism and today, on Oct 28, “we make a pledge that we will lay the foundation of a new Pakistan by getting rid of the Zardaris, Madaris and usurpers.”He said the public meeting had given its verdict that people would not rest until they had rid the country of ‘Ali Baba and his 40 thieves.’
